what is it about rejection that makes our insides coil so?

and I'm not targeting just romantic rejection, either. rejection - however it may be worded or actioned - is something that always leaves the rejectee with a bitterness of soul that cannot be lifted with the quick, phony smile that is tacked on at the end.
